PRACTICE-BASED AIR QUALITY EDUCATION & DATA LITERACY CURRICULUM WRITER

POSITION DESCRIPTION

We are seeking a short-term consultant to help develop a community-centered air quality education and data literacy curriculum. The curriculum writer will work with our air quality and community education subject matter experts to translate a curriculum outline into a facilitator’s manual consisting of four modules with learning objectives and participatory activities. The curriculum writer will use participatory, hands-on, experiential learning activities, not traditional classroom-based instruction techniques.

Location: Atlanta, GA; remote considered. Anticipated start date March 1st, 2024.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:

KNOWLEDGE

Required

Candidates must demonstrate an understanding of the following:

  • Paulo Freire’s Critical Pedagogy or other alternative pedagogy to traditional education models
  • Experiential, participatory, practice-based teaching methods
  • Environmental science
  • Health literacy and/or data literacy frameworks Strongly preferred While not required, we will prioritize candidates who have knowledge/ experience of the following:
  • Air quality and air pollution
  • Environmental justice  
  • Environmental  health literacy
  • Community-participatory  engagement
  • Health behavior theoretical change models such as Social Cognitive Theory and the Health Belief Model 

 SKILLS

Candidates must have the following skills:

  •  Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  •  Proficient in Microsoft Word
  •  Innovative and creative

EXPERIENCE

Required

  • Candidates must demonstrate and share examples of participatory, practice-based curricula or other similar  trainings they have developed, or co-developed. Strongly preferred
  • Experience working in partnership with environmental justice or disenfranchised communities in the U.S. or globally.

 EDUCATION

A minimum of a bachelor’s degree is preferred, but candidates will be assessed based on the above eligibility criteria and not necessarily their formal education.

PAYMENT

Fixed fee daily consulting rate for 21 days based on documented experience.

PART-TIME COMMUNITY OUTREACH COORDINATOR

POSITION DESCRIPTION

We are seeking a part-time Community Outreach Coordinator to join our team. The Coordinator position is for candidates with extensive experience working in the environmental arena and who have an understanding of environmental justice, the clean energy transition, and its complex challenges. The Coordinator will be responsible for community engagement and outreach to environmental justice communities and communities experiencing inequities in energy burdens. The Coordinator will support a federal grants program, develop an outreach and communications strategy, create outreach and communications materials to promote the program, and share program information with communities, community-based-organizations, and community leaders.

The Coordinator will work directly with external clients and communities throughout South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, especially remote and island communities. The Coordinator
will be expected to travel in the region at least 25% of their time. This
position is contingent upon the receipt of funding from submitted grant
applications.

Responsibilities may include:

  • ·       Work in a team environment to plan and execute all phases of the project.
  • Work with the team to identify communities for targeted outreach efforts.
  • Develop outreach plans and associated activities.
  • Create communications and outreach materials to be shared on websites, newsletters, and social media.
  • Organize, attend, and present at community events.
  • Coordinate, support, design, and/or implement educational lessons and community outreach related events, including workshops, town hall meetings, special events, social and cultural events, educational booths, educational talks, informational visits, etc.
  • Help develop public education and information materials, presentations and displays including informative instructional materials.
  • Respond to public and community inquiries and brief the organization’s staff on matters of public interest and concern regarding this project.
  • Provide and facilitate training to community members, education community and community leaders.
  • Contribute to the writing of progress and other reports.
  • Provide administrative support and organize and convene informational meetings, listening sessions, and community discussions around environmental justice and clean energy transition topics.
  • Provide support for in-person and virtual meetings, including meeting coordination and note-taking and analysis.
  • Synthesize and facilitate feedback from partners on identification and prioritization of technical assistance needs, and develop technical assistance needs assessment reports.
  • Identify and assess how environmental justice communities can participate in and benefit from technical assistance and funding opportunities.

Location: Atlanta, GA with travel throughout South Carolina,
Georgia, Florida

  • Knowledge of environmental justice and the clean energy transition.
  • A self-starter with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple simultaneous projects
    under strict timelines and within confidential circumstances.
  • A strong work ethic, ability to maintain and model high personal, ethical, and professional standards, as well as an outgoing and positive personality.
  • Must be able to work outside normal business hours; must be able to travel regularly throughout the region, as needed.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills and the ability to communicate, translate, simplify, and articulate complex ideas into easily understood and relatable concepts.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Candidates must hold a valid U.S. driving license and be able to drive their own car for travel in the region (associate travel costs will be reimbursed).
  • Experience working in partnership with environmental justice or disenfranchised communities in the U.S. or globally.
  • Candidates must be able to work outside normal business hours.
  • Candidates must demonstrate and share examples of how they have conducted outreach to a variety of communities to gain their trust and collaborate on initiatives.
  • 2-4+ years of hands-on experience in coordinating and/or leading community engagement or outreach programs in the areas of community engagement, public health, education, or another related field.
  • Experience designing, developing, and implementing outreach programs in public health or related initiatives.

Strongly preferred

  • Experience conducting outreach and
    engagement activities with island and remote communities in South Carolina,
    Georgia, and Florida.

EDUCATION

A bachelor’s degree is preferred, but candidates will be assessed based on the above eligibility criteria and not necessarily their formal education. We encourage strong applicants without a bachelor’s degree to apply.
